Tips for Buying at a Furniture Store

I wanted to share with you some tips for when you're buying at the furniture store. The problem is that we are completely inexperienced when it comes to this place. It isn't too often that we shop at these stores. It might be something that happens once every 10 years, maybe even 5 years if you're lucky. The point I'm trying to make is that it isn't like shopping at the grocery store every week. You basically don't know how to find the discounts, you don't know how to protect yourself as a consume and you really don't know what they're selling techniques are.

Consumer Credit – 0% Down – No Payments Until 2011

This is something that you're going to here when you're considering a purchase. They're going to try and sway you with the idea of not having to pay for a while. Often you can wait for a good year before they ever expect you to put a payment down and that is really a problem. I hope logic kicks in, so that you don't think that you can get furniture for a year without any additional costs to you. That just isn't the case. The fact is that they won't charge you a single penny of interest during that time.

What you probably won't be told and it is buried in the fine print is that they'll just throw the interest on the debt as soon as you have to make your first payment. Basically you're going to get a high interest line of credit and have a year of interest added on to it before you are ever required to make your first payment.

There's a trick that you can take advantage of though. The year of interest they're going to add onto the line of credit won't be added until that year is up. This means that if you pay of the credit before the that time, you won't pay any interest. Of course a furniture store won't want you to do that because they can make more money with you paying interest.

Do They Have Free Delivery?

This is a question that you're going to have to ask someone as soon as you get in. Assuming that you're getting furniture, you'll probably end up with something big that won't fit into your car. A lot of the furniture stores that have really cheap prices actually charge for delivering it to your home. This is sort of how they make their money back. It's one of those hidden charges that people don't think about until they've already committed to buying.

That is why it is important to know the store policy on deliveries. You're going to save yourself a lot of frustrations. Nothing is more demoralizing than going to a store, seeing something you like at an amazing price, but finding out you're going to have to pay a few hundred for delivery.

Buy in Bulk and Save!

Unlike grocery stores, furniture stores have the capability of cutting deals and things like this. Obviously if you're going in to buy just one piece than you're not going to get a deal. If you buy an entire living room set, than you can cut a deal. And don't be afraid to haggle with a sales person on the floor.

Throwing out a number doesn't hurt. The worst thing that can happen is that they'll say 'I can't do that'. At least you threw something out there. Since most of the salespeople work on commissions themselves, they have the leeway to cut deals additionally. The commission on selling a living room set is huge, so they'll be willing to cut a deal with you to save hundreds just so they can get part of their commission (which is better than no commission).
